Can you imagine how Deep Purple sound without the Hammond? Well, everybody who came to Osnabruck know. With Don's first touch the Hammond stopped functioning. That was the beginning of a very special evening. You could see the doubt on the faces of the band. After Pictures of Home Roger, Paicey and Steve started a little jam session, giving the roadies time to try to repair the Hammond (the return Mumblin' Thing Blues!) but Don felt it was kaputt for the night. So, they played on with Don using his other keyboards, and he did a wonderful job. Lazy and Space Truckin' on the piano, Fireball on the synthesizer and so on. (one for bootleg fans!) From time to time you could see the others looking at Don wondering with what he would come up with this time. Best song of the evening was The Well Dressed Guitar, Steve was so great that even his wife said later on that she was so proud of him this night.

When I met the band later that night Ian Gillan was so enthusiastic about the night that he kept talking about it to everybody who could hear. Don mentioned the picture I took before the show (see our Osnabruck photo gallery), when he was practicing a new song. Photographer Didi Zill was there too and he said that he is working on a new book of Deep Purple pictures. I asked Ian if there are any details about his coming solo tour. He answered that this week there will be more known about this and that probably only Canada and the USA will be visited

sicuramente l' show alternativo è andato benissimo, puntando sulla grande capacità d'improvvisazione dei nostri e sull'esperienza di don, che penso si sia salvato degnamente le chiappe davanti a un incidente del genere

Chiaro, però sarebbe curioso sentire che ne è uscito fuori

in quanto "tastierolo" ritengo che tutti gli strumenti a tastiera debbano avere la stessa importanza. quindi non dimentichiamo synth, tappeti (per le atmosfere) e soprattutto il pianoforte (this time around...)
è ovvio poi che nell'economia della musica purple l'hammond è di importanza vitale...

Dipende anche dal tipo di musica che intendi suonare: nel jazz ad esempio non servono synth o tastiere, solo piano o hammond.
Nei DP puoi levare tutti gli altri suoni di tastiere & affini, il 99,9% delle cose sono fatte con l'hammond. Anche se c'è da dire che da quando Airey ha preso il posto di Lord si sente qualche synth in più,

...e infatti di questo ne sono contento.
lord più che altro smanettava coi synth in sede live nelle prolisse improvvisazioni (made in japan, calijam...) oltre che usare ad esempio il synth-brass di anya (ma siamo già al 1993).
certo l'hammond è un marchio di fabbrica, ma paragonando chessò agli elp, keith emerson nonostante facesse un largo uso dell'hammond non si risparmiava neanche sul grandpiano, piano honkytonk, e moog.
(ma forse è un paragone troppo forzato essendo gli elp non un gruppo hard rock)
