Generously portioned, annotated and illustrated, this Purps collection is not, however, recommended to the punter in search of the Greatest Hits. Such gonzo glories as Highway Star and Strange Kind Of Woman are conspicuous by their absence.
Instead, one may thrill to the early take of Speed King, released in error in Holland and Mexico, and now preserved here for those Purpaholics for whom no waxing is too rare.
Those new to pleasures Purple are directed, as ever, to the 1973 double live album, Made In Japan; the presence here of a rip-snorting Black Night from those shows (if not the album) makes a case for addition to all future pressings of Purple’s finest hour-plus.
