 Il giornalista e critico musicale inglese Mick Wall ha citato (e criticato) i Deep Purple nel suo libro When Giants Walked the Earth: A Biography of Led Zeppelin. Opinione un po' controversa, destinata a far discutere...
Eccone l'estratto, grazie a Daniel Bengtsson:
"But if the third Zeppelin album polarised opinion, in the long term it went a considerable way to cementing their reputation, confounding expectations and proving there was more than simply being the 'new Cream' they had started life as. Instead of more wall-shaking heavy rock classics, the third Zeppelin album shouild be looked at as the first convincing marriage of Page's fiery occult blues and Plant's swirling Welsh mists; the first serious proof of the band's ability to move beyond the commercial straitjacket that would eventually leave contemporaries like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple marooned in a creative cul-de-sac, churning out copycat hits until they finally ran out of steam, key members coming and going, their reputation sealed forever as second-rung niche acts, truly loved only by heavy metal fanatics".
In pratica Wall sostiene che Led Zeppelin III (1970) è da considerarsi come "la prima seria conferma dell'abilità della band di andare al di là della 'camicia di forza' commerciale che avrebbe in seguito lasciato i contemporanei Black Sabbath e Deep Purple arenati in una sorta di 'tunnel creativo'". Sempre Sabbath e Purple, secondo Wall, dal 1970 avrebbero infatti "solo sfornato hit copione fino allo stremo delle forze, con membri chiave che uscivano e rientravano dal gruppo, e con la loro reputazione segregata ad un pubblico di nicchia, amante solo dell'heavy metal".
Già. A parte il fatto che lo stesso Jimmy Page all'uscita del libro ha minacciato di portare in tribunale Mick Wall per alcuni dei contenuti della biografia, a commento ricordiamo solo che l'autore del libro è lo stesso "Mick Wall at Kerrang" che ricevette un bel "Fuck You" dai Guns N' Roses nella canzone "Get In The Ring", contenuta in Use Your Illusion II (1991). E tutta un'altra serie di insulti, che evitiamo di trascrivere.
Anzi, già che ci siamo, gliela dedichiamo questa canzone. Giusto per ricordare...
