Live at the Olympia ’96

Comprising an entire warts’n’all set from Deep Purple’s 1996 European excursion – which introduced ex-Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse as replacement for the once more huffily departed Ritchie Blackmore – this double CD is more tour souvenir than yet another addition to Deep Purple’s already substantial live back catalogue. As such, it will undoubtedly be welcomed by fans, although, as it features, alongside old favourites like Speed King, Smoke On The Water and Woman From Tokyo, six tracks from last year’s studio album, Purpendicular, and follows so soon after late-1994’s live Come Hell Or High Water, others may consider its release somewhat premature.

Recordings from their 1993 Japanese dates, featuring stopgap six-stringer Joe Satriani, however, would be a different kettle of sushi.
